+PLUS project

A pan-European collaboration for more inclusion and less discrimination in grassroots sports.

Pan Idræt is a proud partner in the European Erasmus+ project +PLUSS (Policy and Leadership for LGBTQI+ in Sport and Society), which aims to strengthen inclusion and combat discrimination in European grassroots sport. The project is led by EGLSF (European Gay and Lesbian Sport Federation) and brings together a number of organizations and sports clubs from across Europe – including Pan Idræt in Copenhagen.

+PLUS

What is the project about?

The +PLUSS project works to promote diversity and create a safe environment in sport – especially for people with different sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expressions. By bringing together both LGBTQI+ sports clubs and mainstream sports organisations across Europe, the aim is to build more inclusive, sustainable and inclusive sports communities.

The project focuses in particular on:

  • To create knowledge about effective measures against discrimination
  • To build networks and cooperation between clubs and leaders
  • To develop policy proposals that can influence sports policy locally, nationally and European-wide

Pan Idræt's role in the project

As Denmark's largest LGBTQI+ sports association, Pan Idræt actively contributes to the development and implementation of the project. We participate in network meetings, share experiences from our many years of work with inclusion, and help test and evaluate the tools and strategies that the project develops.

Key results

The project's most important materials and results are freely available and can be downloaded as PDF:

  • Research report about the history and future of LGBTQI+ sports in Europe, illustrated as a story.
  • Guidance with recommendations to both LGBTQI+ clubs and mainstream sports organizations.
  • Policy paper with concrete recommendations for decision-makers and sports authorities.

All documents are developed in collaboration with a wide range of partners and are based on research, practical experience and interviews.

Focus areas in the project

Strengthened cooperation and exchange of experiences:
The project creates a common network among LGBTQI+ sports clubs in Europe, which will promote knowledge sharing, support and joint development.

Knowledge about inclusion mechanisms:
Through research, the project maps out what works when it comes to making sport more open and inclusive. This knowledge is disseminated in reports and guides for use in practice.

Capacity building and leadership:
There is targeted work to strengthen LGBTQI+ sports leaders through training, sparring and building networks - so that they can make a difference both in their own clubs and in a broader context.

Political influence:
The project contributes with concrete recommendations to political decision-makers and sports organizations, with a view to ensuring better conditions and more equality in sport.

Long-term effect

The +PLUSS project is not only intended to produce concrete results during the project period, but also to create long-term changes in sports. In the short term, the participating clubs will develop new strategies against discrimination and strengthen the community across the board. In the longer term, the project will pave the way for new clubs, stronger leaders and greater political focus on the conditions of LGBTQI+ people in the world of sports.
