  • In 2007, Copenhagen Scrum held the European non-professional, gay rugby union tournament called the Union cup.
  • 2008 Copenhagen Scrum participated in the non-professional, gay rugby union tournament called the Bingham cup in Dublin
  • 2017 After the club disbanded for a period, it was restarted in 2017 by Peter Munk, Jimmy Knud Christensen and Joe Vollmar as Copenhagen Wolves RFC
  • In 2022, Copenhagen Wolves RFC joined the Stocholm Berserkers and Oslo Raballder Inclusive Rugbyklubb RUFC team, which Asgardians participated in the 2022 Union Cup in Bingham

We aim to diversify and help grow the rugby community in denmark by providing an inclusive place for anyone who is interested in playing rugby or supporting us.

Along with the many other LGBT+ sports clubs in Denmark and globally, we hope to continue to encourage people to challenge stereotypes and continue to expand diversity within the sporting community.

I have been a member since August 2021 when I started the Intro to Rugby days. I can definitely recommend it as you will meet new players who have often never played rugby before and you will start out at the same level as most of them.

When I moved to Copenhagen, I wanted to do some sports as I had a lot of free time and I thought it would be a good idea to try rugby. I knew some of the players and they seemed to be having a lot of fun. I also wanted to join the team to meet new people and make more friends because being the shy person I am makes it difficult sometimes and I also hoped that it would bring me out of my shell and become a more positive person.

What I like most about the team? That we always support each other and have a great time on and off the field. Rugby is both a very physical and tactical sport, but we are good at trying to help each other become better players and having fun while doing it.

Was there anything I was worried about before I joined? Sure! I didn't know if I would fit in with the group. But it turned out there was nothing to worry about. I felt very included right from the start! Some people also ask me if I have the body type for rugby as I'm not a big guy. The truth is that in rugby we need every type of player, so I've never felt like my size was a problem.

Any tips for new members? Come to as many training and games as you can! And join us socially too! Rugby takes time to learn, but it's fun, and with each training session you will gain a better understanding of the things you are doing.

I have been playing rugby on and off for many years and started around 2004 I think. I founded the team with Joe Vollmar and Peter Munk and we had our first training on May 7th 2017. We created the team after an evening of talking about the many memories and fun times we had with rugby in the past. Where we missed the incredible sense of team and brotherhood and the many trips that Union Cup and Bingham CupWe decided shortly after to try to start this team and we had great success after a very short time.

A big part of this rugby team is that everyone is welcome on our team, regardless of their previous rugby experience or ethnicity, sexual orientation or gender identity. I am gay myself and I believe that many people like me could really benefit from meeting in places other than bars. I love the friendships you develop within and outside the team, the amazing experiences you have together and how you truly become part of a family that has your back and will always be there for you. We have so many different nationalities and personalities and still manage to come together and make it work. I love how social we get together for a beer after training, for dinner or other fun events. Rugby can be whatever you want it to be.

For anyone out there reading this, if you have even the slightest voice in your head saying maybe you should come out and practice, we will make sure to match you with a player and make sure to make you feel welcome. One of my very first thoughts was also that I didn't feel like I was big enough to play rugby. I didn't know at the time that rugby caters to all body sizes. For new members just starting out, I would say listen to your coach, ask for help if you need it, and just have fun.
    Come and join us!!!!!

    Joe

    Head coach

Before becoming the head coach of the Copenhagen Wolves, I played for the Minneapolis Mayhem, and I was an assistant coach for Armstrong Girls Rugby and head coach for DTU Exiles. Rugby had been a big part of my life when I lived in the US and played for the Mayhem. I missed it and the friends that come with it, so I agreed with my husband to restart the Wolves. It's been 2 years now.

The brotherhood is one of the most important parts of this sport. It’s a bond between you and your teammates that you’ve built through the sweat of practice. It’s forged by the bloodshed of games, as you fight as a team until the end. Finally, it’s tempered by the beer, cheers, and songs of the third half. It’s a sport that personifies “Work hard, play harder.” I love it for the joy it brings me and my brothers. I hope to be able to build that same love for the game with the Wolves.

The first time I thought about joining an inclusive rugby team was back in Minnesota. I picked up a recruiting card at a bar. Some crazy idiots were trying to start a new rugby club. I thought, “Why the hell not?” It was a sport that had fascinated me for years. Ten to twelve guys showed up for the first meeting. I loved that this group defied traditional gay stereotypes and wanted to learn how to play one of the toughest sports. From that first meeting, the sense of brotherhood that characterizes rugby was already drawing us together.

If I had to give any beginner a tip: Believe in yourself. You are capable of so much more than you think. You are capable of amazing feats and can endure more than you think you can. Fight for your brothers, and the fight, won or lost, is always worth the effort.

I've been playing rugby on and off since 1977. So I've been playing for a while now. I signed up for a gay team because I felt we needed to change the attitude in sports to be more LGBTQ+ inclusive. For me it was a good idea to be in an inclusive team, that's why we make a difference. I've been a member of the Wolves for 15 years now.

We are amazing and socially inclusive. Rugby is a great sport to know your own limits and push them. The players are a great group and they all have their own commitments and personalities. Together they make an unbeatable team. Even if you feel tired after training, a match or a night out, we socialize. And as wolves run in packs, we are not alone and rugby is just a very social and international sport.

New players, don't be afraid. It may look confusing and scary, but the third half solves everything - as far as I remember. Don't miss the opportunity to meet a great team and go out and meet other gay teams. We have an incredible experience and always enough (too many) drinks.

    Match secretary

I have been with the Wolves for 2 years now. This is my first experience with a contact sport. I practiced karate for 10 years back in my days, and after moving to Denmark I wanted to get back into proper shape and condition. That's when I was invited to practice by a guy who was so enthusiastic that I couldn't help but give it a try. I quickly found out about a sport where players actually work as a team rather than going after each other, a game that pays off for every effort you put in, and with great interest.

The Wolves are a united group. We support each other and are friends on and off the field. Being Wolves has brought us together (for many, in a foreign country) and has revolutionized how we experience the scene in Copenhagen.

Rugby may not be very popular in your country. In Italian eyes, it’s an extreme sport! Give it a try anyway – regardless of your body type and level of expectation. Inclusive rugby is much more than fighting on the field. It’s about fighting together. It’s about getting to know and having fun with other amazing teams from all over the world. It’s so much fun that even straight people are involved! It’s a world in itself, well worth the risk of getting a foot or two injured.

The rugby team captain at the time was the friend who invited me to join and try the sport and I loved it straight away. It's a completely new sport to me and I played with the Wolves for almost 2 years. I joined the Wolves to give it a try. I was looking to try some contact sport and I thought rugby was really cool and a macho sport; it really is! I cherish the bond the players have with each other during the games and the many fun and social events outside of training. Rugby brings out many of the best qualities in a player, especially towards each other.

Before I joined, I was afraid I wasn't good at the sport. But I realized that rugby is a game that needs all kinds of people. And I was afraid I would get knocked down by other big guys, and I got knocked down, but it was fine.

To all interested players: Don't be shy, come and try a few times, take yourself on the field, and the rest of the players will make sure you are taken care of in the best and friendliest way.

    Stefano

My name is Torcivia Stefano. I was born in the city of Mar del Plata, Argentina. I have been playing rugby since I was very young in a team called Sporting.

I have lived in Copenhagen since 2019, and I have been with Copenhagen Wolves since 2021. I have found a group with a lot of talent, with good energy and a lot of desire to learn.

Rugby is a sport that educates, and the main purpose is to have fun.

But personally it's a passion, I love playing rugby, I love watching rugby and learning more about this beautiful sport every day.

I moved to Denmark in 2015 and I have never played rugby before. However, my boyfriend has been both a coach and a player, so rugby was always present in our home. It is also through him that I joined the team in 2020. I was a winger. Unfortunately, after I got injured, I had to stop playing. I didn't leave the club though; I still support the team with administrative and logistical tasks these days and run our social media (yes, I am the one who updates this website 😊 ).

What I love about Wolves is the diversity and inclusion of the club. We are an inclusive rugby club and everyone is welcome to join. I like that we are able to connect sport with friendship. We enjoy spending time together and taking part in various social events and activities. But! When it's match day, we are ready to go out on the pitch and fight for victory.

Copenhagen Wolves is a great team for those who want to practice outdoor sports, connect with smiling teammates, build friendships and have a lot of fun in your free time!

    Lucas, the wolf of honor

In September 2021, we lost our friend, brother and teammate Lucas Corréa Lemes to cancer. Lucas joined the Wolves in 2020 and quickly became vice-captain. Lucas was a fantastic man with an indomitable fighting spirit who truly personified the core values of rugby. In the short time we knew him, he showed such a passion for life and new experiences. He was an inspiration to us all to live each day to the fullest.

In his honour, our captains have created the Lucas Award to commemorate his legacy and give to the Wolf of the Year who also demonstrates the same kind of passion for life and rugby that Lucas did.

We will always remember our brother and friend.
