Rainbow Sports Film Festival
Mark your calendars for January 31 and February 1, 2025.
Here, Pan Idræt and Cinemateket in Copenhagen are opening the third edition of the Rainbow Sports Film Festival – a film festival that shows feature films and documentaries, where sports and LGBT+ topics are the focal point. This year's six fantastic films have been found, which you can read more about below.

Friday, January 31 at 4:30 PM
The teenager Lara is transgender – boy on the outside, girl on the inside. The changes of puberty and the preparation for a gender reassignment surgery put a lot of pressure on Lara. The professional goal is to become the ballerina Lara, and she fights hard and determined to achieve her ballerina dream. She receives support from her father as she throws herself into the ballerina dream at a new school. But here she meets adversity and struggles with her own ambitions. Throughout the film, Lara is faced with big choices that will shape her for the rest of her life. Girl won four out of five nominations at the Cannes Film Festival in 2018.

Look forward to a funny, romantic but also serious coming-out drama about Jake, a Chinese Canadian teenager. Jake is a high school student who is already struggling with a number of expectations from his family, girlfriend and peers. It doesn't get any easier when the handsome young basketball player Aleks becomes Jake's roommate. Jake falls completely in love with Aleks. The film shows what expectations, misunderstood kindness, and secrets can do to a family. Both Jake and the rest of the family have to go through a lot before the future becomes bright.
The film is from Canada – no subtitles. Running time: 119 minutes.

How much will you push your body, your mind, your personal life to be the best? Are you ready to sacrifice your girlfriend to achieve your own ambitions? Backspot is about ambitious cheerleader Riley, who faces both new adversity and the increased need for perfection and triumph when she and her girlfriend Amanda are selected for an all-star cheer squad. Here they meet the very demanding lesbian head coach named Eileen and her slightly more human assistant Devon, who is a drag queen by night. Riley is forced to find the right balance in her life and what makes her happy.

Watch the film about LGBT+ advocate Marinette, France's greatest female soccer player of all time and the first to turn professional in the American league. Marinette, who is a lesbian, has loved soccer since she was a child, where she played on a boys' team, encouraged by her coach. At home, her mother is the victim of her abusive and alcoholic father. In America, Marinette doesn't have to hide her lesbianism and gets a boyfriend. However, the American league goes bankrupt, and Marinette returns to France and joins the French national team. Back in France, Marinette meets the woman of her life. She confronts homophobia, fights for equality in French sports and the establishment of professional relationships for female soccer players.

Here is the comedy about perhaps the world's worst football team, but it is also the story of the transgender football player Jaiyah, who becomes FIFA's ambassador for equality. In 2001, American Samoa loses 0 – 31 to Australia in a World Cup qualifier. As the 2014 World Cup approaches, the team hires coach Thomas Rongen, played by Michael Fassbender. From the start, he is frustrated by the players' lack of football skills and the islands' limited facilities. He also dislikes the player Jaiyah, because he believes that Jaiyah lacks discipline and focus. In the end, the two get into a fight, but they bury the hatchet and begin to build a national team. Jaiyah was the first openly transgender athlete to participate in a World Cup qualifier.

How far will you go to keep a secret? How much are you ready to destroy for yourself and others to maintain your image as a strong masculine and straight footballer. The film is about two young footballers who have known each other since they were eight years old. We meet them the night before their first ever match for the first team – a Champions League match. Out of nowhere, one of them kisses the other. This kiss resonates for the next 10 years of their lives. The film is built up of three intense scenes where psyche, expectations, inner demons and love are given free rein. The film was nominated for a BAFTA Award in the category Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer. Russell Tovey plays the lead role.
